History
The
Bollin family started their first business in 1912 as a neighborhood
Grocery store at Dorr and Ewing Streets in Toledo, Ohio. Their
grandfather, Gilly Bollin, operated this enterprise until
1955, expanding it twice.
Gilly
revolutionized grocery shopping in the Toledo area by supplying
grocery carts in his store; in that way his customers could
select their
own merchandise without the help of a salesclerk. This helped
to promote impulse buying and allowed the markets to sell
a wide variety of products in addition to food items. Thus,
the modern concept of "one-stop shopping" was begun.
The
entire Bollin family - both parents, six boys, and one girl
- worked
in the store at one time or another. Gilly nearly lost everything
during
the Great Depression, but he managed to retain the store and
made it
flourish. By 1955, only Jerry and Harry Bollin remained with
the Grocery store while the rest of the family pursued other
interests. In 1964, Toledo Urban Renewal bought the building
at Dorr and Ewing and the contents were sold to another grocery
firm. At that time Harry retired; and Jerry, feeling obligated
to provide for his family as his father had done for him,
founded the Bollin Distributing Company.
The
firm distributed Bissell Shampooing Products and vacuum bags
to Toledo grocers for rental and resale. Then, as the demand
changed, Bollin provided Blue Lustre and Rinse-N-Vac products.
At about that time, grocers began to use labeling guns for
pricing their merchandise so we decided to supplement our
product line by distributing the guns and providing pricing
tags and labels. Noticing the wide variety of pricing systems
retailers used, we diversified our services to better satisfy
our customers' needs. In 1976, we changed from Bollin Distributing
Company to Bollin Distributing Incorporated. We handled a
greatly expanded line of labels and tags, as well as, Blue
Lustre carpet shampoo and Rinse-N-Vac rental equipment. The
Rinse-N-Vac line was subsequently replaced with Thermax machines.
In 1990, we sold the Thermax division and concentrated our
efforts into manufacturing and distributing labeling supplies.
We are now undergoing yet another change as Bollin and Sons,
Incorporated to Bollin Label Systems. This change has occurred
because we are no longer merely a Distributor of pricing and
labeling equipment. We now manufacture the labels we sell
and we also have a state-of-the-art Graphic Art Department
with complete in-house capabilities.
In
January 1998 we established an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership
Plan). In November 1998 all employees were gifted 1 share.
This in effect makes all employees owners.
